JORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL,
14 - 23 FEBRUARY 2003
Every year during the February half-term, the Vikings invade York for the annual Jorvik Viking Festival. This week long Festival reflects the traditional Viking celebration of the coming of Spring, 'Jolablot'. There is always a varied programme of events for all the family, including re-enactments of landmarks in Viking history, saga telling and traditional craft demonstrations.
The 2003 Festival will take place from
14 - 23 February.VISITOR 13m On 13 July 2002 JORVIK welcomed its 13 millionth visitor. Dame Judi Dench, together with an escort of 13 Viking Warriors, the Lord Mayor of York and the Chairman of York Archaeological Trust formed the reception committee for the 13 millionth visitor. To mark the occasion, the lucky visitor won a 2 night cruise break to Bergen, generously donated by Fjord Line. Additionally, as part of the celebrations and to recognise her status as York's Person of the Millennium, Dame Judi was presented with the Freedom of JORVIK.
We would like to thank everyone who has visited, supported and worked with JORVIK since its creation in 1984. This support has enabled York Archaeological Trust to continue the valuable work of uncovering our history, and bringing the past to life!
Thanks to Jan M for sending this article, which appeared as part of a longer description of the event on the web site of the Jorvik Viking Center at http://www.jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk/ (in the Special Events section). NOTE: I looked through the event listings and DID NOT find Judi Dench scheduled for an appearance this year.
