Thank you, Sharon, for pointing out the Visit Britain website, which offers lots of information on the goings-on in Britain as well as some background on the locations used for films made in Britain. On that site I found this quote from Judi:
This country's castles, stately homes and country houses, so beautifully preserved, allow Britain a unique opportunity to recreate history without having to recreate film sets. I have been fortunate to have filmed in many of them and and to have been given the chance to play the role of two great women - Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown and Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love. Appearing in Shakespeare on stage is particularly nerve-wracking if only because there's such a background of history to every part. So it was a joy to be part of the film, Shakespeare in Love, recreating that history.

Queen Victoria's country home, Osborne House on the Isle of Wight was actually used in filming Mrs Brown while Hatfield House, an English country estate, was transformed into Queen Elizabeth's Greenwich Palace for Shakespeare in Love. This map provides visitors with a wonderful opportunity to seek out the historical settings where these and many other films have been made. They are the cornerstone of Britain's heritage."
