"Well, of course JUDI DENCH did not appear in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical CATS, that opened in
London, England, 1981. But did you know there were plans for her to be in it? This handbill proves it. Judi was to play the part of Grizzabella. Unfortunately, she hurt her ankle, I believe, just before the show opened, and of course you may already know that ELAINE PAIGE stepped in to replace her. The single page handbill (also known as an ad, flyer or leaflet), measuring 6 x 9.5 inches, was issued to announce the PRE-OPENING of the show. The front has the often seen CATS show logo and artwork. But at the bottom, you can see that the opening date of APRIL 30TH is noted. The reverse announces that: "The cast will include JUDI DENCH, PAUL NICHOLAS, WAYNE SLEEP, ROLAND ALEXANDER, SARAH BRIGHTMAN, JOHN CHESTER, GERALDINE GARDNER, SHARON LEE HILL, FINOLA HUGHES, BONNIE LANGFORD, ANITA PASHLEY, MYRA SANDS, LES SAXON, JEFF SHANKLEY, SUE JANE TANNER, JOHN THORNTON, DONALD WAUGH and KEN WELLS" The opening date of APRIL 30, 1981 and the preview date of APRIL 22, 1981 are also noted."
