Babes' bound for Broadway
by Baz Bamigboye
Those West End babes Judi Dench and Maggie Smith are in discussions about taking David Hare's sell-out hit West End play The Breath Of Life to Broadway in the autumn.

For a while it seemed Dame Judi did not want to go, leaving the producers with the problem of finding a replacement of sufficient stature to stand up to Judi's great friend Dame Maggie.

Now I learn that, once a few contractual details are ironed out, Judi will join Maggie in the U.S.

The play, about a novelist (Judi) who goes to meet her husband's former mistress (Maggie) after he disappears out of her life with an even younger woman, has been playing to packed houses at the Haymarket Theatre Royal.

The performances by the two actresses have grown deeper and richer during its run.

In London, the girls (as I like to call them) have extended their run until March 1, which means that all those who have been fruitless in their quest for tickets have a chance to see it - if they move quickly.

When the run ends in London, Dame Maggie will work on the third instalment of the Harry Potter film series, reprising her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall.
