In French, trompe l'oeil means trick of the eye. When Sandy mentions it, she is referring to a style of painting that gives an illusion of photographic reality. In the painting at the left the window is not real. The cabinet above houses a stereo system, but the the doors are painted to make it look as though it were a bookshelf.
