Thanks to David McAnally, we have the following:
"The Oxford University Press (in England), has published both the Oxford Encyclopedia and Oxford Dictionary, and both publications mention that a Lance-Corporal is higher in rank than a Private, but lower in rank than a Corporal.

The entry on the British Army in the Oxford Encyclopedia gives the ranks in ascending order as: Private, Lance-Corporal, Corporal, Sergeant, Quartermaster-Sergeant, Sergeant-Major for the non-commissioned ranks; and Second-Lieutenant, Lieutenant (pronounced as 'leftenant'), Captain, Major, Lieutenant-Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major-General, Lieutenant-General, General, Field Marshal for the commissioned ranks."
