Dame Barbara Cartland was the world's most famous romantic novelist She was also an historian, playwright, lecturer, political speaker and television personality. She wrote over 680 books and sold over 750 million copies all over the world mostly of romantic love set in the 19th century. Cartland rose to her status as a prodigious writer of escapist novels during the 1960s and maintained her writing pace through decades. She passed away on May 21, 2000, at age 98, just two months short of her 99th birthday.
